In fact, you are scored at the end of each level, and you can replay levels to your heart’s content. You can get very creative with your kills in My Friend Pedro. There are explosives and barrels that help you out. You can ricochet bullets off objects in order to reach enemies. There are a variety of objects you can kick at enemies. The environment itself plays a role in how you kill your enemies. The slow motion is a huge part of the gameplay but isn’t the only cool thing about My Friend Pedro. A bar shows how long you can stay in slow motion, and the lower difficulty levels allow you to spend a lot of time in slow motion if you desire. As you can imagine, the amount of enemy fire can make things very dangerous to your health. This slow motion looks absolutely stunning as you twist and turn your body in the middle of a hail of bullets, blood, and debris. With a variety of guns at your disposal, you take down enemies by slowing down time, allowing you to control the movement of your body and the direction of your aim. I like to think of the gameplay as beautiful violence, in that your gunfire plays out in a beautiful fluid motion. More importantly, my disappointment in the story did not prevent me from fully enjoying the game, thanks to some amazing gameplay. I would have preferred that the team pick one tone instead of mixing funny and serious. Without going into any more spoilers, I will just say that the story was the only disappointing aspect of the game. In fact, there are plenty of movies that are very enjoyable despite a lackluster plot.

An argument can be made about whether or not a story in an action movie is important. The plot is a bit of a roller coaster, with highs and lows throughout the game. It finally ends in a bizarre fashion that left me more confused than satisfied. The game eventually goes back to a more serious tone and features a very cool twist. You take on some “hardcore gamerz” that spew lines that you will find in all your favorite gaming memes. You spend some time in what I can only describe as your warped imagination. After the introduction of Pedro and some crazy battles through the underworld, the plot turns into something you might see in a satire. While I appreciate how wacky the plot gets, I must admit that the flow of the story feels disjointed. While the themes are familiar, the fact that you are led and coached by a sentient banana makes this game go into some pretty wacky and unconventional territory. Thankfully, the game becomes very unique very quickly.
There are countless underworld thugs that you need to fight through as you find the person who ultimately put you in this situation. You wake up in a dark basement with no recollection of how you got there.
The game starts in a way that feels familiar to those who love the action genre. And sure enough, My Friend Pedro did not disappoint. After all, any game featuring slow-motion gunfire and flips was a must play in my book. As the marketing for My Friend Pedro came out, I knew I had to try this game. As an adult, I look for games that give me the sensation of being in an ultimate action movie. Have you ever wanted to become the ultimate action hero? Did your recent trip to see John Wick 3 push you to talk in a gravely voice, dress in a fresh suit, and look for mobsters to take down? Since I was little, I have always imagined what it would be like to be like all my favorite action heroes.
